“Jingle Bells” was the first secular Christmas song, written in 1850.
”Up on the Housetop” was the second, written in 1857,
about Jolly Old Saint Nick.
First published in a magazine,
the song was inspired by Clement C. Moore's 1822 poem “A Visit from St.Nicholas,”
also know as “The Night Before Christmas.”
